Antony Edmonds, Photographer

canoe kayak sprint training

For the last couple of years I have been making a conscious effort to establish a creative style to my photography. My style is driven by a desire to show the drama of sport, and usually focuses upon the individual's role in that drama.

For me a photo is a way of bringing the spectator into the athlete's world, and should convey something of the competition, struggles, ambitions, triumphs, distress, etc of the drama in which that athlete is involved.

It should say that this athlete is "special" (heroic!), they are doing something beyond the normal, and it deserves our attention.  So where possible I'm trying to get very close to the action, and yes I do some manipulation, to dramatise the environment. Staying on the right side of acceptable is a challenge!

canoe kayak slalom I think Mark's photo demonstrates that style quite well.  The photo of the athletes running is a bit different, but as you can see we had a lovely Autumnal backdrop, and the shallow DoF and the wooden bridge give a nice composition, and put the focus on the athletes in training.
