This weekend Ash River, Bethlehem in South Africa will host the 2012 African Canoe Slalom Championships. The event which is organized by Canoeing South Africa takes place from 3 – 4 February and will also serve as an Olympic Qualifier.

Swiss kayaker Michael Kurt has won the New Zealand Open canoe slalom K1 title for the second consecutive year, beating a star-studded field of international paddlers on the Mangahao River near Palmerston North last Sunday.

The 2012 season officially started this weekend with the New Zealand Open being the first ICF ranking race of the year (28 – 29 January). After the last ICF slalom committee meeting it was agreed that the Oceania Open (24 – 26 February) will not be part of the World Cup Series 2012.
